WhatsApp Business API pricing in 2026: what changed and what you pay

The Jwab team · · 4 min read

If your business answers customers on the WhatsApp Business Platform (the “WhatsApp Business API”), you pay two separate things: the software you use to manage conversations, and Meta’s own fees for the messages you send. This guide explains Meta’s side, which changed again on 1 October 2026.

Prices and rules below follow Meta’s official pricing documentation as of October 2026. Meta can change rates on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October, so check the current rate card for your market before budgeting.

Meta charges per delivered message

Since 1 July 2025, Meta has charged per delivered message, not per 24-hour conversation. What you pay for each message depends on two things:

  1. The message category (below).
  2. The recipient’s market, worked out from their country calling code. A message to an Egyptian number (+20) is priced at Egypt’s rate, a message to a Saudi number at Saudi Arabia’s rate, and so on.

Messages your customers send you are free, and messages that are never delivered are not charged.

The four categories

Category What it is for When you can send it
Marketing Offers, announcements, re-engagement Any time, with an approved template
Utility Order confirmations, shipping updates, appointment reminders Any time, with an approved template
Authentication One-time passwords and verification codes Any time, with an approved template
Service Free-form replies to a customer Only inside the 24-hour customer service window

The customer service window opens when a customer messages you and stays open for 24 hours, restarting with each new message from them. Inside it you can reply freely. Outside it you can only start a conversation with an approved template.

Marketing is usually the most expensive category, and authentication and utility the cheapest. Utility and authentication also get lower rates at higher monthly volumes in each market.

What changed on 1 October 2026

Two things that used to be free are now charged:

  • Service messages beyond the first 1,000 per business phone number per month. The allowance resets every month and doesn’t roll over.
  • Utility templates sent inside an open customer service window.

Meta also asked businesses to have a payment method on file. Without one, service messages stop being delivered once they become chargeable, so check this in your Meta Business settings today.

What is still free

  • Every message a customer sends you.
  • The first 1,000 service messages per phone number each month.
  • Messages in a free entry point window: when a customer messages you from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad and you reply within the customer service window, all message categories are free for up to 7 days.

A worked example

A clothing store in Cairo receives 3,000 customer questions a month and answers each one with about two replies, so it sends 6,000 service messages. It also sends 2,000 shipping updates (utility) and one offer campaign to 1,500 customers (marketing).

  • Service: the first 1,000 replies are free; the other 5,000 are charged at the service rate for Egypt.
  • Utility: 2,000 messages at the utility rate.
  • Marketing: 1,500 messages at the marketing rate, usually the highest of the three.

Multiply each line by the current Egyptian rate from Meta’s rate card to get the month’s bill.

Five ways to keep costs down

  1. Answer completely in fewer messages. One clear reply costs less than three short ones. AI agents with a good knowledge base help here.
  2. Send marketing only to people who want it. Smaller, well-targeted campaigns cost less and protect your number’s quality.
  3. Use Click-to-WhatsApp ads for acquisition: conversations that start there get the free entry point window.
  4. Pick the right template category. Order and appointment updates are utility, not marketing.
  5. Watch delivered and read rates for every campaign, and stop sending to segments that never read.
